Chapter 6
Maybe he should have talked it over with Richie first, but Jason had a pretty good idea he’d speak as nursing home staff first and as concerned friend second. After meeting Gramps’s elbow yesterday, Jason almost rethought his plan, but half of Gramps’s confusion had to be because he was drugged to the gills.
“Your turn to give him morning meds, Jason.” The nurse handed over a white paper cup of the sort Jason associated with ketchup dispensers in hamburger joints, rattling with pills. “The white ones regulate his blood pressure, the orange one keeps him regular, and the little pink one keeps him calm.”
More like snowed. Jason sorted through the contents of the cup with one finger, like he was memorizing the imprints. The little pink tablet stuck under his fingernail, and the nurse never saw his disappearing trick, being too busy disapproving out loud about bare hands. No chemical coma for Gramps. The old man didn’t comment either, just swallowed what he was given. They had a lovely morning, with Gramps playing Bingo and Jason typing away.
Jason pulled the same sleight of hand at lunch. He could almost swear Gramps was livelier all the way around, eating his meal and going to “exercise class” with some perky activities lady. Jason about had the rhythm down: get Gramps involved in something, then type like crazy.
Hope Richie did well on his test. Jason would have liked to say something to him about Gramps, who made a couple gallant remarks to the ladies coming in for a primp ‘n pretty session after the exercise class. “My Molly would like your sweater,” made an old lady smile, but the aide escorting her didn’t smile at all when he kept asking for “Molly. Where’s my Molly?”
“I haven’t seen Mrs. Epperson,” Jason commented to the aide. “That’s who he’s looking for, unless he decides one of these other ladies can be Molly today.” Hearing Gramps ask for someone long gone and finding “her” still weirded him out. Maybe later today Gramps would be aware enough to understand.
“She’s in the hospital,” the aide muttered darkly, settling her charge carefully. “She fell yesterday. Broke a hip.”
Damn! That must have been after she left with her family! All the Oriental runners in the hallways at home would have to go—he’d roll them up tonight. Tripping hazards, the lot of them. The hardwood floors would be much safer.
“Come on, Gramps,” Jason urged. “Let’s get out of here before the ladies paint our fingernails pink.” He walked his grandfather down the hall, wondering if there was another activity, or a game or a movie that would hold his attention long enough for Jason to finish this chapter. They could make this work, once he got Gramps home. Today’s word count multiplied by twenty-two working days a month, looking good….
They returned to the common area, where another old gent occupied the huge plaid recliner. No problem: sitting on the loveseat next to it would keep the ugly from rubbing off on Gramps’s clothes.
